Erwin Olaf will present a new series of photographs which were imaginedafter receiving the Vermeer price in 2011.

The photographer decides to leave his studio for the first time: «The surface was too limited. I wanted more space and architecture. Berlin is now the new center of Europe. We are living in a time that is in many ways comparable to 20 years. Once again, we’re dancing on a volcano, stuck in akind of war. Everything could collapse tomorrow, or mùaybe today because of the crisis.»

He was inspired by the vacuum, the menacing architecture and absurdity. «I always start with a dream. Accessories and Models are exciting my imagination.»

The series of photographs deals with the conflict between generations, between ignorance and knowledge. «I’m not trying to claim anything like the baby boomers are attacked by younger generations or something like that. My role is to create tension.»

Erwin Olaf was born in 1959 in Hilversum, Netherlands. He lives and works in Amsterdam since the early 80s. His work has been featured at Gallery Rabouan Moussion Paris, Hague Museum of Photography, Chelsea Art Museum, Ludwig Museum in Cologne etc...

Erwin Olaf a réalisé vingt photographies et une installation pour Berlin, sa dernière série. Elle comprend sept scènes, treize portraits et deux autoportraits. Berlin fut créé à l’occasion du prix Johannes Vermeer, qui fut remis à Olaf en 2011.

« De toute façon, je voulais sortir de mon studio. L’espace était trop limité. Je voulais plus d’espace et d’architecture. Berlin est actuellement le nouveau centre de l’Europe. C’est une ville qui fabrique de l’histoire comme aucune autre. Nous vivons à une époque qui est sous beaucoup d’aspects comparable aux années 20 du siècle précédent, lorsque Berlin était aussi the place to be. Une fois encore, nous dansons sur un volcan, coincés dans une sorte d’entre-deux-guerres. Tout pourrait s’écrouler demain, non, même aujourd’hui à cause de la crise. »
