The compressed globular body has an upright mid-section bordered by raised edges, the upper edge with a 'beaded' band repeated on the shoulder and at the base of the neck and another encircling the neck. The amber-brown glaze has large areas of iridescence. The cover is similarly glazed all over.

An amber-glazed vase of similar form, but without a cover, was excavated in 1977 from a tomb identified as Khitan, and is illustrated in Wenwu, 1983, no. 9, pl. 2. Compare, also, a related vase and cover dated to the Liao dynasty, illustrated by Zhang Bai, Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in China, Vol. 4: Inner Mongolia, Beijing, 2008, p. 111, no. 111.
