Remains of polychrome paint. He is cleaning his ear in order to better hear the truth.

Note: Compare with a luohan very likely from the same set in the Asian Art Museum San Francisco (Avery Brundage collection), no. B60S319 (dated Yuan).
With a luohan of the same size at Sotheby's HK, 4 December 2015, lot 584, there dated Southern Song.
With another similar piece at Christies NY, 26 March 2010, lot 1238, there dated Song to Ming.
