Stone grinding disc, Stone grinding rod, Neolithic Peiligang Culture (about 6100-5000 BC)

01

Stone grinding disc, Stone grinding rod, Neolithic Peiligang Culture (about 6100-5000 BC). Stone grinding disc is 68 cm long and 6 cm high; stone grinding rod is 58 cm long. Unearthed in Peiligang, Xinzheng, Henan in 1977. Henan Museum Collection.

Stone grinding discs and stone grinding rods have appeared as early as the late Paleolithic period. They were originally used as tools for grinding nuts and other collections. After agriculture, they became grain threshing and grinding tools. The early stone grinding discs mostly used natural flat stones, with less decoration on the edges and various shapes. The stone grinding discs and stone grinding rods of the Peiligang culture are exquisitely made. The surface of the disc is flat and the shape of the sole of a shoe. Some of the stone grinding discs have four feet left at the bottom. They are the most distinctive stoneware products of this culture.

It is worth noting that in the tombs of the Peiligang culture, stone grinding discs and stone grinding rods are generally placed on the side of the deceased, and are often placed together with clay pots or three-legged bowls, indicating the process of grain or nuts from processing to dressing. However, agricultural production tools such as axes, shovels, sickles, adzes, and chisels were generally placed on the feet of the deceased, and were not mixed with other utensils.
