the base cast with an inscription reading Hongzhi shisannian zhongdong zhi wuxi wu jinxian wenkui zhi wudaibo miao jiqi (Made in the 13th year of Hongzhi (in the mid-winter by Wu Jinxi of Wuxi on the occasion of his obtaining the Wen Kuai (the top candidate in the public imperial examination) to be presented as a ceremonial vessel in the family temple of Wou Tai-Pai).
