Wind God and Thunder God Screens, by Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858), 173.8cm×116.0cm, Tokyo Fuji Museum.

The same theme had already been drawn by Tawaraya Sōtatsu (1570-1643), but the wind god and thunder god of Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) are quite different from the humorous works of Sōtatsu. The mysterious atmosphere of the black clouds on which the two gods are riding already represents it. While following the techniques and composition of the great predecessors, he created his paintings. However, his unique paintings also resonate with the works of other talented painters of the late Edo period.
