The star lot of the auction was Lot 538, a 1620s linen 'ruffler', which sold for £230,000 plus fees against a pre-sale estimate of £6,000-10,000. For many decades, it was stored in a plastic bag in the owner's wardrobe after she inherited it from an elderly neighbour.
The ruffler is an important surviving part of fashion history as well as British heritage, and we are pleased to say that it has been acquired by a private British collector who wanted to ensure that it remains within the UK, where it can be preserved and kept for decades (and centuries) to come.
