Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669), Ephraim Bueno (Bonus), Physician, 1647. Etching, drypoint, and engraving, 24 x 17.7 cm. Gift of J. Lionberger Davis, 86:1951 © Saint Louis Art Museum
This portrait of a bearded man wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a cloak over his dark clothing depicts the Jewish physician Ephraim Bueno. Rembrandt van Rijn's portrait of the physician helps illustrate the artist's connection with different groups in Amsterdam. Both Rembrandt and Bueno shared an interest in the city's medical communities, and both contributed to the publishing press owned by the Sephardic rabbi Menasseh ben Israel, who issued books on Jewish mysticism.
