Yue stoneware spittoon with an inverted hemispherical base section, a narrow neck and widely flared bowl shaped upper section. The spittoon has grey-green glaze. A very similar spittoon from the Percival David Collection is preserved in the British Museum, PDF 266 with the note: In the eighth and ninth centuries there was a shift of economic power in China from the north to the south, coinciding with a revival of prosperity in the southern Yue ware distilleries at Yuezhou in what is now Zhejiang province. The form of this vessel is also found in contemporary Tang metalwork

Provenance: From the collection of merchant Alfred Julius Forkel (1873-1934), assembled in China prior to 1910,drawn and described in the collector's diary, written between 1901 and 1910, on page 65, no. 3.
