Yue stoneware spittoon with an inverted hemispherical base section, a narrow neck and widely flared bowl shaped upper section. The spittoon has grey-green glaze. A very similar spittoon from the Percival David Collection is preserved in the British Museum, PDF 266 with the note: In the eighth and ninth centuries there was a shift of economic power in China from the north to the south, coinciding with a revival of prosperity in the southern Yue ware distilleries at Yuezhou in what is now Zhejiang province. The form of this vessel is also found in contemporary Tang metalwork

ProvenanceFrom the collection of merchant Alfred Julius Forkel (1873-1934), assembled in China prior to 1910,drawn and described in the collector's diary, written between 1901 and 1910, on page 65, no. 3.
