Note: The brushpot is elegantly carved with a complex design of chilong prowling across a field of lingzhi and clouds. The exterior is bathed in an even, pale green glaze, the color evoking jade. The large size of the vessel is ideal for holding brushes of different sizes in a scholar's studio. Jay Jones (1924-2024) and Mary Jayne Jones (1924-2022) were married 72 years, living most of that time in the Seattle area. They enjoyed traveling, skiing and tennis, loved entertaining, and had a passion for collecting art. They had diverse artistic interests, from an extensive collection of Arctic Inuit sculpture to archaic Asian artifacts and an exquisite collection of early 20th century Japanese lacquer scholar's boxes. In addition, they had a unique collection of American paintings ranging from historic to contemporary.

Note: This vase exemplifies the fascination with archaism held by Qianlong emperor and the Qing court, both in its form, based on Zhou and Han dynasty bronze vessels, and in the ge glaze of the Southern Song dynasty employed.
