The slender body, rising from a broad foot to a rounded shoulder and a short, narrow, tapering neck, is freely painted in a windswept style around the outside with an immortal in a landscape beneath a band of rolling foliage and above a band of rising leaves (Restored drilled hole in the base, very short hairline crack on the inside of the mouth).

 

Provenance: From an important Spanish private collection, acquired at Sotheby's London, 10.11.2010, lot 29.

 

Note: The painting style on this vase is the well-known 'windswept' style. A smaller meiping with a similar design is in the Shanghai Museum, and is illustrated in Lustre Revealed: Jingdezhen Porcelain Wares in the Mid Fifteenth Century China, Shanghai, 2019, p. 336, no. 236. Another example with a similar scene beneath a band of mythological animals and waves from the Tianjin Museum is illustrated ibid., p. 337, no. 237.

Lot 826. A blue and white decorated porcelain kendi in the shape of an elephant, Wanli period. H. 18,4 cm. Sold: €2 000 EUR (Est: €1 200 EUR - €1 800 EUR)

 

The kendi is modelled in the shape of a reclining elephant wearing a saddle cloth and jewelled tassels on the back of a vase that is still expanding at the top. Partly stabilized hairlines to the body and bottom, restored chip to the right tooth.

Lot 852. A good Transitional porcelain sleeve vase with underglaze blue decoration of a novel scene, Transitional period, mid-17th century. Height 43 cm (Restored). Sold: €8,500 EUR (Est: €3,000 EUR - €5,000 EUR) 

 

The tall, cylindrical sides are painted with a scene depicting numerous officials and servants in a rocky terraced garden with bamboo, pines, and banana trees; on the back, the motif is interrupted by swirls of clouds obscuring high rock formations; the slightly retracted neck is surrounded by a row of drooping, tapering leaves. 

 

Provenance : Important Spanish private collection, acquired at Christie 's Amsterdam , December 16, 2008 , lot 138 (copy of invoice preserved).
