Ulfert Wilke, "Master of the Line"

a

Ulfert Wilke (1907-1987), Forte, 1973, acrylic on canvas, 67 x 95 inches

TUCSON, AZ.- The Gallery at 6th & 6th will feature Ulfert Wilke, “Master of the Line”, on view March 3 through April 21, 2007. The exhibition will feature monumental paintings and selected works on paper by one of the premier modernists of the 20th century.

Ulfert Wilke was an artist, educator, museum director and major collector of native and indigenous art. His art is iconic of the mid-20th century, usually completely nonobjective, often monotone or black and white, and incorporating numbers, letters, calligraphy and, in later years, collage. He was influenced by his friendships with Lionel Feininger, Mark Tobey, George Rickey, Robert Motherwell and Raymond Parker, but he looked at all of the art of the 20th century, and much of it he experimented with. A very cerebral artist, Wilke's work is all about the line. Most of the paintings in this exhibition have not been seen for 30 years. (
