Superbly carved around the exterior in high relief with bunches of gnarled leafy grapevines bearing fruit and squirrels amidst clusters of grapes, the interior formed of overlapping lotus petals and the openwork handle in the form of gnarled branches, the horn of an attractive honey-brown tone turning darker at the foot. 15.1cm wide. Grapes and squirrels were a popular motif during the Ming and Qing dynasty. They symbolize abundant offspring and happiness.
Compare a related 'squirrels and grapes' rhinoceros horn cup illustrated by Thomas Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Hong Kong, 1999, pl.171. A similar 'squirrels and grapes' rhinoceros horn cup was sold at Christie's New York, 15th/16th December 2011, lot 2463, and another one at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2012, lot 202.
