Note: A rivière is usually a quite short necklace, set with a series of faceted gems, graduating in size. The style first developed in the late 17th century, when settings were closed-back, as exhibited on lot 352. The name ‘rivière’ means ‘river’ in French, it refers to the the idea of a continuous, shining stream around the neck.
